Tricks to Cheap Travel
This is where travel agents have the upper hand. They know when to book travel, when to wait, when to do a package, and when to buy separately. If the travel agent specializes in Disney travel, then they probably went through the "College of Disney Knowledge." So, they know all of the "ins" and "outs" of Disney travel.
When I'm ready to book a trip, I compare prices. First I price out all of the components separately, then I look to see if I can get a better deal booking a package.
First, I'll check and see if the Walt Disney Travel Company has any promotions, such as "free dining"or "buy 4 get 3 free." You can check on the disneyworld.com or disneyland.com sites.
To check on prices of a Disney package, I'll go onto disneyworld.com or disneyland.com, as well as Expedia and Travelocity. You should know that all of these sites won't quote you the same prices. Some will include taxes and fees while others will not.
Discounted Theme Park Tickets
The Undercover Tourist is an online ticket broker that sells discounted theme park tickets. They are a Disney Parks USA Selected Ticket Seller, Disney's authorized program for ticket resellers. They buy blocks of new, unused, discounted tickets from Disney and resell them at a slight mark up.
Be aware when you're comparing ticket prices that Disney will quote the cost of the ticket without including the sales tax, while The Undercover Tourist includes the sale tax in their quotes. Also, The Undercover Tourist has free shipping, whereas Disney does not. However, Walt Disney World's "Will Call" (picking them up at the Transportation and Ticket Center) is free.
The Undercover Tourist offers it's best deals on tickets exclusively for Mousesavers Newsletter Subscribers. These special prices are not published on on MouseSavers.com. They are provided only through a "special link" in the MouseSavers free newsletter.
Use Caution with Discounted Park Tickets!
Unless the source of the discounted park tickets are authorized by Disney to sell Disney theme park tickets, then it's most likely a scam!
Many people think that they're getting a good deal on Disney theme park tickets off of ebay or craigslist or some other source, only to find out when they're at the turnstiles that those tickets are not valid and the tickets are confiscated.
Most of those tickets are partially used. Disney theme park tickets are non-transferable. Once someone uses the ticket, their ticket is "linked" to them, through use of "biometric scanners" at the turnstiles. You put your finger in the scanner and your finger print is recorded.
Cheaper Times to Travel
The cheaper times to stay at Walt Disney World is when crowd levels are down and not as many people are traveling. Basically, if school's are out and it's a holiday, then the prices are higher.
Stay at a Disney Resort Hotel
Staying at a Disney Resort saves you money.
1. You don't have to rent a car. Walt Disney World offers free transportation to and from the Orlando International Airport called, "Disney's Magical Express." They also offers free transportation within Walt Disney World.
2. If you decide to rent a car or are driving to Walt Disney World, you'll save money by receiving free parking, which now cost $14 a day.
Airfares can fluctuate daily, so you need to keep an eye on them if you want the best deal. I've noticed in the past that airlines come out with some lower fares for Spring travel in late January-early February. The good deals on air travel for Summer travel would usually come out in late April-early May. However, in the last year, I've noticed that the airlines were not dropping their prices very often, especially to Orlando. So if you see a good fare, take it. You never know when the airline will pull the fare.
In the past, it used to be early on Wednesday mornings, that airlines would lower their fares. The fares tend to go back up the next day. On the weekends prices are higher, because most people book travel on the weekends. I wouldn't book air travel on the weekend unless I knew that the fare listed was a good price. Otherwise, save yourself some money and wait until Wednesday. However, I haven't seen the airlines lowering their prices much lately.
How to find the cheapest fare available
Travelocity and Expedia used to have a select "flexible dates" option that would bring up the absolute lowest fare to a destination. Now you can no longer do a flexible flight search on these sites and other sites like them. However, I have found that airfarewatchdog.com will bring up cheapest fares, as well as Skyscanner.com.
Getting the Airfare Down
If the airfare is too high, one way to compensate for this cost is to buy a vacation package with the airfare included. It can also work the other way around if the hotel is too high and the airfares are lower.
Other ways to compensate for a high airfare or room is get the cost down some other way. Some hotels have mini refrigerators in their rooms. You could buy a few breakfast items and eat your breakfast in your room.
The Family Suites at the All Star Music Resort have mini refrigerators, Moderate, Deluxe, Deluxe Villas at Walt Disney World have mini refrigerators at no extra cost. The villas have full kitchens. You can rent a mini refrigerator at the Value resorts for $10 a night.
Other Factors in Cheaper Travel
Gas prices, natural disasters, the economy, mergers... I usually keep my eye on the business news for news on the travel industry and Disney. When the Walt Disney Company's profits are down, so are their prices or when people aren't booking travel because of the economy.
